Backgammon Game Rules
While the outcome of a roll of two dice is what basically determines each move in backgammon, a few other rules can influence your winning and losing.
You can only move your stones to open points, or points occupied by zero or one stone of the opposing color. You can not move your stones to points occupied by two or more stones of the opposing color.
Should your stone land on a point occupied by a single opposing stone, you must move that stone to the bar, which is located at the center of the board. On your next turn, if you have a stone on the bar, you must move that stone before any other.
There will be cases when the outcome of your roll leaves you no choice but to move a stone to a point that isn't open. Since it is not allowed, your remaining options then are only to move a different stone using either the total value of two dice or one of the numbers of two dice, in which case you lose the chance to use the other number to move another stone. In this situation, you must use the higher of the numbers to move your stone.
There will also be cases when the outcome of your roll does not give you any chance to move any stone at all. In this situation, you simply lose your turn.
The only time you can get a stone off the board is when all your stones are on your side of the board. If you hit a number that allows you to move a stone off the board, but you have one or more stones resting on the opponent's side, you can not move that stone off the board.
If you hit a number that allows a particular stone to move off the board, you must use the number to make that move. You do not have the option to use that number to move a different stone.
Usually, a roll of the dice does not count if one or both of the dice land on a stone or off the board, or do not land flat on the board.
